The Third Week.

After my talk with my tutors I planned to come out of my sketchbook and experiment with all aspects of my theme on different sized papers.

This is what I ended up with...

A1 sheet

I do like this, but my problem is that I still managed to end up doing a kind of design and I think its because I tried to do too much on one sheet. 

This idea was inspired by Beatriz Milhazes work and I wanted to include my puzzle pieces idea that was inspired by M C Escher. 

Another problem I had with this was making it abstract. I tried to make each individual puzzle piece have different colours in them so the same colours weren't meeting in an adjacent piece. I did manage this but it was extremely time consuming due to it being so busy and as you can see I haven't yet finished it. I grew tired of this and it dragged on for a whole week whilst also stealing my motivation. 

The third week was not my best. 

The First Tutorial.

This first tutorial was just a means of getting to know my ideas and the direction I want to take. I had mixed feedback but I found it very helpful. They liked my pattern research but wanted me to maybe use different sized papers and not just stick to my sketchbook.

My main goal from the feedback was to do more experimenting.

I was happy with what I was given, we agreed that I needed to experiment with scale and media and not be so controlled with my work.

The Colour.

My colour palette has come from WGSN.

I intend to focus mainly on the top colour palette but also use the last four colours from the bottom and maybe introduce the other colours as test pieces. 

I chose this colour theme because I am aiming my outcome towards soft furnishings for interiors and this is most suitable. According to WGSN it is also most suitable to natural elements as well and is why I think it is most fitted to my project. 

The Sketchbook.

My sketchbook pages will include all aspects of my theme that i want to work with. Initially, I want to keep geometric patterns and florals separate in my sketchbook so that I can combine them later on in sheet work.

This double page is of geometric pattern that I collected from my secondary source mood board.

This page is an experiment with colour. Separating the flowers into different block colours. I like this way of working with the overlay of basic shapes but at this early stage I don't think I should be working in this possible design way. 

This is an experiment with a combination of flowers and puzzle pieces. I wanted to see how this would look like in a kind of patchwork form. 

This is a simple flower that I thought would be interesting to manipulate further using CAD and on work sheets.

The Starting Points.

As a basic starting point to my theme I began drawing linear flowers, both realistic and stylised. I plan on keeping these this way as originals so that I can scan in and manipulate them on the computer, photocopy them or trace them to use in further experimentation.

I do this because if i make a mistake or do something I am not quite happy with I find it easier to refer back to these starting points and not having to completely start from scratch.

The Moodboards.

These are images found from mainly book references but there are some wallpaper samples that I collected an artist examples in there too.

The Beginning.

Over the summer period before i started my final year i began collecting primary and secondary sources relating to my theme.

My primary research consists of flowers. I wandered around my local town centre taking photographs of the floral aspects in gardens, hanging baskets, on the road side etc. I went and asked permission to photograph flowers in any local florists too. To draw from life I bought a few bunches of different flowers from a supermarket so I could draw from various viewpoints.

Secondary sources came from books and the internet, looking at several artists for inspiration and also finding other floral imagery that are maybe more stylised. Geometric research has come from a selection of secondary sources.

This research together makes up my starting points. I intend to experiment with these ideas both seperately and in combinations as well.

The Project.

The title of my project is Abstraction with Geometrics and Florals. These are all elements i enjoy working with and my aim is to incorporate them into the patchwork technique. My inspiration and ideas have come from the combined works of Beatriz Milhazes and M C Escher. I think that Eschers work links to the patchwork technique in the way that they both contain a puzzle like quality. I like this idea and the geometric style of Milhazes and I plan to experiment with a mixture of these to create my own unique style.
